Mt. Lebanon, NY, c. 1860-1870. In the year 1823 Brother Orren
entered the children's order at New Lebanon Church Family at the age
of seven. In 1832 he worked under the guidance of Amos Stewart,
cabinetmaker and elder brother. For the next 50 years he applied his
Shaker views to his extraordinary cabinet work so that today he is
considered one of the foremost classical Shaker cabinetmakers of New
Lebanon. His fundamental Shaker belief is embodied in the forms of
furniture he created. This creed is nevermore so evident than in
this exceptional work stand. Exhibited at the Whitney Museum, NY,
and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; pictured in Shaker
Design, J. Sprigg, pages 50-51; exhibited Nov. 1975 Women's

Shakers were very much a part of the life of our family, as my
sister, my brothers, and I were growing up in Pittsfield. On the
weekends we would go 'over the mountain' to New Lebanon to play with
our friends in the Shaker village, to explore the old buildings and
scavenge for pegs, bottles, and old tools. On Sundays after church,
my father and I would drive out to Hancock to visit the last
remaining Shaker sisters who had moved to Hancock when the New
Lebanon community finally closed. My mother and father had immense
respect for the simplicity and spirituality of Shaker life. The
Shaker presence was symbolized for us by the few restrained,
functional, and elegant pieces of Shaker craftsmanship that filled
the house: the Shaker rocking chairs, the oval carriers and boxes,

scriptural code, New Lebanon, NY, c. 1843, 15" h, 16 1/4" w,

RARE GIFT DRAWINGS Scrapbook pages with four watercolor
"Gifts": the first drawing depicts a Shaker red Brick Dwelling with
a yellow star above and green grass below, titled "A Gift of Love
and Blessings to Sister Mary Wicks"; the second drawing depicts a
Sacred Tree separated into four parts, each with a verse beginning
"Upon the green grass,...", a central yellow diamond within, the
tree surrounded with branches and all encircled with yellow dots, a
mound of green grass below the trunk with six red tulips; the third
drawing depicts a Sacred Tree with central red heart and branches
with 12 creeds listed such as "Faith, Hope, Honesty, Continence...",
(this drawing shows minor tears and a small piece missing at top
right); the fourth drawing depicts branches with blue berries
flanked by red tulips, on top of an upside down triangle filled with
a poem "I hear the voice of Mother whisper worship God this day...",
the poem above three branches with red berries, flanked outside with
two facing red birds, both on leafed branches. All pages measure 12"
h, 14" w. The scrapbook is a leather style cover embossed and
gilded, tied with a twilled cord, c. 1880-1900. It was found in a
group of Shaker objects from an estate. These Shaker pieces were
acquired in the Pittsfield area in the early 1900's. (Note: the
pages were removed from the scrapbook for ease of viewing.) See page
208 The Shaker Holy Land, E.R. Horgan, 1982, Harvard Common
Press, for a revival of Mother's Work "as late as the 1880's, the
Shaker Sisters in Harvard customarily gathered in their rooms during
long winter evenings, and joining hands while seated in a circle
would receive from a medium among them communications from the
departed." If this was happening in the 1880's in Harvard one would
assume it was also happening in the other communities, especially
Mt. Lebanon and Hancock. The scrapbook is included in the lot. These
are possibly unique examples of late 19th c. Shaker gift drawings
and poetry still within the spirit of the 1840 drawings, by an as
yet unknown Sister. |
