TEKE MASK

Teke-Tsaye culture, Democratic Republic of Congo, dance mask, carved in abstract, geometric form with a horizontal division of the rounded face, the mask has various incised designs, including a stylized bird, called "Mossenjo", the mask was used by the Kidumu society, a bite cord remains attached, an older, less elaborate example in contrast to the more recent, highly stylized decorative ones on the market, aesthetically, the mask demonstrates the early influence of African carvings upon modern art, 14" h.
