CARTE-DE-VISITES
Depicting late
19th c. side show entertainers: "Annie Jones, The Bearded Lady", born in
Virginia in 1865 (d. 1902) and suffered from Hirsutism. She went on exhibit
at the age of nine months under the name of "the Infant Esan". She earned
$150 a week with P.T. Barnum. Photograph by "Chas. Eisenmann, 229 Bowery,
N.Y." who advertised on the back of his cards "Extra Inducements to the
Theatrical Profession". Also "Mr. I.W. Sprague (Isaac), age 38 years, height
5' 5 1/2", weight 46 pounds, pictured with his wife Jasmon and his three
sons...". Billed as one of the human oddities and the original thin man of
the Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was born in Bridgewater, Mass. in 1841; Also
"Mlle. Antoinette" whose hair dropped all the way to the ground; and one of
the earliest "Fat Ladies" with the oval stamp on the back of the
photographer "A.J. Vandeford, Baltimore"; (JPR collection). |
