First edition, Homes of American Statesmen; with Anecdotal, Personal, and Descriptive Sketches by Various Writers, 1854, full leather, with gilt title on spine, five raised bands, gilded decorative patterns on front and back boards, corners very slightly rubbed, gilt edges, text shows slight age toning, good overall condition. Note: The first American book illustrated with an original photograph, which is a print of the Hancock House in Boston tipped in as a frontispiece. Pencil inscription under photograph: "Hancock House Boston, An original sun picture". A blind stamp states "Whipple's Patent Crystalotype (sic) Washington St. Boston". Margins around photo slightly foxed. "Illustrated with engravings on wood, from drawings by Dopler and daguerreotypes, and facsimiles of autographed letters"; (JPR collection).

Dear Children: I thank you very much for sending me the four-leaf clover and in return I send with pleasure the autographs you ask for. Very truly yours Mark Twain", (as the note is in quotes it probably was written by Isabel Lyon, personal secretary to Clemens at Stormfield/Clemens home in Redding, CT), [autograph collection was started in the summer of 1908, would send a four-leaf clover with each request, thus the reference in Mark Twain's reply]; along with a printed photo portrait of Mark Twain, by the Perry Pictures, Boston Edition; (from the collection of the late Frederick Hagar).
