19th c.
pine lift lid box in original green, 7" h, 11 3/4" l, with contents, on the
top of the lid a stencil carved figure in a rowboat, and above it initials
"JWL", inside the lid a scratched mariner's compass, contents include
"artifacts that belonged to Joseph Whiting Lincoln (1859-1938)...":
the original brass stencil of the man on the rowboat, small jar of lead
buckshot, "Miller's Gamecook Whiskey" flask/bottle with linseed oil, a large
sleigh bell (seen hanging in a photograph taken by George Starr of Joe
Lincoln's workshop), a small glass and brass alcohol lamp dated 1867", a
cast iron oil can "Hammer & Co, 1884", a tin windup duck call (still works),
and a box of 50 "38-long" rifle cartridges in a green labeled Winchester
box, "Stetsons Patent Oct 24 1871". All items were in the box when
acquired from Mrs. Lincoln by Mason Foley in the late 1940's from "J.L.'s
Gardner St. Shop (Accord Mass). Acquired from Mrs. Foley after Mr.
Foley's death in 1968, John P. Richardson.". |

bottle of "Imperial Cement" in the box; a small green bottle of buckshot; a

Collection belonging to Leonard Edison Buker, Hingham, Mass., "enlisted
Feb 15, 1862, Co. F. 32nd Regiment, promoted to Sgt. in 1863, fought in
many battles, wounded at the battle of Gravelly Run, Mustered out June 29
1865"; Pine box marked "I. Robbins, Soda/Soap" on one side, 4" x 12" x 6",
wire hinged lid, stenciled on top "L B", and a pastel card with
draped flags, musket, sword and hat, inside lid a print of "Pres Lincoln"
and a newspaper article on Samuel Lincoln; Box contents: "Rebel Surrender
Flag" from battle of "Weldon R.R.", white sewn cotton, (possibly a tent
flap or ditty bag section), with attached handmade braided twine, some holes
in center, attached tag reads "Buker Rebel Flag from Weldon R.R.", 19" x
25", (from JPR collection, found in Hingham under attic floor of Buker
house); a leather wallet, stenciled on inside flap "L B", contained three
Confederate bills - $50 (not good condition), $20 (dated 1864), $10 (dated
1864), all Richmond, Virginia; wooden hand-held mirror, initialed "L B, Co
F", applied brass frame, original glass, 9 1/2" l; small hand-blown bottle,
with two gold buttons, eagle and shield; tin spring-closed box with matches,
3 1/2" l, initialed "L B";
three iron cannon balls, 1", 2" and 2 1/4" dia;
five "Old Farmer's Almanacs", 1862-1866, all with pencil signatures "L.E.
Buker" at top; pair of reading glasses with wire frames, in original oval
tin box, "pat date Jan 24 180 C. Parker"; "5¢" postage currency bill, and a
"75¢" bill, State of South Carolina, Feb. 1863; five small family letters
(not Civil War); inlaid three-prong fork with carved initials "LEB"; small
cloth bag with lead bullet, (probably the bullet that wounded Buker at
Gravelly Run), and a 19th c. scalpel with what appears to be caked blood on
the blade; small pewter box (2 1/2" l), initialed "L B", with matches, 20
printed cards of Generals and Commanders of the C.S.A. "Chas. Magnus, 12
Frankfort St., N.Y.", (possibly taken from a Confederate prisoner).
